Delta Sigma Theta Chapter at Clark Atlanta University

Wins 2011 Clark Atlanta University Greek Step Show

The Delta Sigma Theta chapter of Clark Atlanta University was the overall winner of the 2011 Greek Step Show at the Atlanta Greek Picnic. The group also won the prestigious event’s men’s division. The show was hosted by DJ Rock T. The Delta Sigma Theta group won the competition by walking to Janet Jackson’s “Sunrise” song. The event is a showcase for Greek student groups.

New York Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta

The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an international membership organization comprised of college educated, primarily black women. The New York Alumnae Chapter was the first graduate chapter in the organization and focuses on the community of Harlem. Its programs focus on youth development and support the visual and performing arts. The chapter’s president is Althea Kitchens.

Founder _________________ was born in Columbus, Georgia. She attended Howard University and concentrated on two foreign languages. After graduating from Howard University, she returned to her hometown of Chicago. She became a teacher, holding various positions in the city, and later retired from the public school system. She was active in civic organizations and was also a charter member of the Queens (NY) Alumnae Chapter.

Thompson graduated from CAU in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts dual degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. She is the Vice President of the CAU Charlotte, North Carolina chapter and devoted to HBCUs. Her background in the retail industry has led her to become a member of the American Nurses Association, Thrifty Authors Publishing Success Network, and YWCA Central Carolinas Quarterly Book Club. She is also an active member of the Clark Atlanta University Charlotte Alumni Association and is a volunteer at the McCrorey YMCA.

Southern Region of the Sorority

The Southern Region of Delta Sigma Theta is composed of chapters at Clark Atlanta University, Tuskegee Institute, Fisk University, and the University of South Carolina. The organization was founded in 1926 by 22 Black women at Howard University, and has since expanded to over two thousand members in all. The first Regional Conference was held in Atlanta, GA on April 9 and 10, 1926. The organization’s first Director was Soror Ruth Wheeler (Lowe) of Atlanta.

The Southern Region of Delta Sigma Theta at CAU is comprised of predominantly Black college-educated women, and addresses the issues that face African Americans. Through a wide range of programs, it addresses issues of physical and mental health, community and international development, and political awareness. Among these are the “Pearl Bearing” Programs. Interested women are encouraged to attend Rush Activity.

Hazing policy

The “Pearl Bearing” Sigma Chapter at Clark Atlanta University is a perfect example of a positive hazing policy. It has a zero-tolerance hazing policy and fully investigates any reported incidents. Hazing is an intentional situation where members of a fraternity are pressured into doing something they don’t want to do. It can be physical, emotional, or psychological. Hazing activities can happen on or off campus and include coercion, harassment, or other actions that cause undue stress and fatigue to members. Hazing activities can be anything from wearing apparel that is designed to humiliate others to engaging in morally degrading games.

In addition to being illegal, Delta Sigma Theta is also committed to a strict anti-hazing policy. This policy is in place to protect prospective members from being subjected to hazing. Members will be punished harshly if they engage in such activities. In addition to the policy, the chapter has published examples of hazing and the consequences of engaging in such behavior. It is important for prospective members to understand the policies of Delta Sigma Theta and the consequences of not doing so.
